Our History
Growing with Purpose
Today, The People’s Pantry of Rochester is a trusted, community-centered resource providing fresh food and essential items to hundreds of individuals and families each month. What began as a small neighborhood effort has grown into one of the region’s most impactful, volunteer-driven community resources guided by a simple belief: access to food should always come with dignity.

Where We Began
The People’s Pantry began in the 1970s as the South Wedge Food Program, a small ministry based out of Calvary St. Andrews Church.
At its core, it was a response to a clear and urgent need: neighbors in the community were struggling to access consistent, reliable food. What started as a modest effort of neighbors helping neighbors, quickly became a vital resource for the South Wedge community.
From the beginning, the work was grounded in care, trust, and a commitment to meeting people where they were.

Over time, the pantry expanded alongside the needs of the community. But its most significant period of growth came during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As food insecurity surged, the pantry rapidly adapted—transforming into the largest free grocery delivery service in Rochester. Operating out of Ashland Street, volunteers mobilized to serve thousands of households, ensuring families could access food safely and consistently during an uncertain time.
This moment marked a shift: from a neighborhood pantry to a citywide lifeline.

Our New Name: The People's Pantry
In 2021, following the sale of its previous location, the organization moved to its current home at 555 Avenue D. With that move came a new name: The People’s Pantry.
The rebrand reflected more than a change in location; it marked an evolution in identity. No longer defined by a single neighborhood, the pantry had become a resource for the broader Rochester community.

Where We Are Today
Today, The People’s Pantry operates as a choice-based pantry, allowing individuals and families to select the foods that best meet their needs — an approach that reinforces dignity, autonomy, and respect.
In addition to groceries, the pantry provides personal care items, baby supplies, pet food, household essentials, upon request and availability.
Powered largely by volunteers and community support, the pantry continues to serve hundreds of families each month, offering not just food, but a consistent, welcoming space built on trust.
Looking Ahead
As the need for food access continues, so does our commitment to our community. The People’s Pantry is focused on expanding access, strengthening partnerships, and continuing to provide food in a way that centers dignity above all else.
